Who We Are

Individuals interested in providing home-based care to the elderly or disabled can apply to become certified as an independent vendor or companion provider for customers of the Newport News Department of Human Services. Companion providers are an important part of the team including social workers, nurses, and doctors assisting persons to remain at home with appropriate help to meet their needs. Customers are assisted with services that allow them to live safely, independently, and with dignity at home.
Tasks performed depend upon the individual needs of the customer. Tasks may include housekeeping (vacuuming, dusting, and/or cleaning bathrooms, floors, or refrigerators), meal preparation, shopping, running errands, personal care and assistance, and companion services.

Providers are paid by the Department of Human Services by submitting invoices on a monthly basis. The independent provider may work part-time or up to 40 hours per week
