Who We Are
The Center provides elder abuse information to the public. Elder abuse can be physical abuse, emotional/psychological abuse, intentional or unintentional neglect, financial exploitation and even self-neglect. Each state has a protective service office to receive and investigate reports of abuse and neglect. These agencies work closely with other programs such as victims assistance, mental health, domestic violence, health care providers and area agencies on aging to ensure that victims receive the help they need.
If anyone suspects that an elder is the victims of neglect, abuse or exploitation or is self-neglecting, call the National Eldercare Locator (1-800-677-1116) to obtain the correct telephone number in your area to report such situation. Note that the names of reporters are kept confidential. Reminder that if immediate danger is present, contact the local law enforcement agency. If you are a caregiver and need help or do not know where to go for help, the locator can connect you to local services.
National Council on Elder Abuse (NCEA)'s website offers fact sheets, state elder abuse reporting numbers, publication lists, how to subscribe to the listserve, state elder abuse law citations, newsletter archive, conference and training listings and links to other websites. Contact CANE (Clearinghouse on Abuse and Neglect of the Elderly) for individually-designed annotated bibliographies, literature searches and elder abuse publications on the internet
